Verse of the day

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

And it has different five verities among them, they are as 1) Vavasa Dogri, 2) Vasava Dehwali, 3) Vasava Ambodi, 4) Vasava Kotwali and 5) Vasava Khatalia.
  • Among them Vasava Khatalia also is a very important language. This language is belongs to Western-Indo-Aryan family. Khatalia is spoken in the Nandod (Rajpipla) taluka of Narmada District and Netrang taluka of Bharuch District. This language is spoken by over 2,41,000 speakers, and this community used this language in their daily lives, in markets and at their homes. The occupation of this language speakers is farming, labour work and animal husbandry.
  • The name Khatalia is derived from a Gujarati word called “khadin” which means “strong” or “aggressive”. Although the Vasava khatalia have a high opinion of their own social standing, other tribes consider them to be a low social class. However, other groups do respect the Khatalia for their strong powers of black magic.  They are masters of black magic religious type ceremonies. They worship the crocodile and make offerings to Devamogara. The people are extremely superstitious and hold deep-rooted beliefs in demoniac influence.
  • 97% of population are animistic Hindus and 3% of population belongs to Christians and other religions. Traditionally, outsiders feared the women because the women chose their partners by spitting on them. If a woman succeeded in spitting on a stranger, he was accepted and did not dare refuse admittance to the tribe for fear of his life.

    Economy

  • The Vasava Khatalia’s economy depends on successful hunting in the lush forests specially in the forests where there is an abundance of rabbits and birds are found. During the monsoon period the Khatalia catch fish in the nearby swollen rivers and streams of Karjan River and Narmada River.
  • The Vasava Khatalia’s often travel for miles on foot or in ox-carts to participate in weekly village markets.  They bring honey, wild roots, and berries to sell; in exchange they buy the majority of the materials they need for daily living (tools, clothing, and jewellery).
Their contact with outsiders and other Bhil groups and Hindu shopkeepers during these weekly market visits is superficial and wary.
  • Recent years many of them are displaced due to the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. They Lack of basic facilities like water, electricity, education, etc.
